Evolution from Canonical to Millisecond Pulsar through the X-ray Accretion Stage

چکیده
We model the evolution of canonical pulsars from the death line to millisecond pulsars through the Xray neutron star stage of accretion from a low-mass companion. We trace this evolution in magnetic field strength starting at B = 10 to 10 G and in period of about 1 s to milliseconds. Important factors are accretion rate and the decay rate of the magnetic field. A broad swathe is traced in the B − P plane according to the value of these factors, which represent different conditions of the binary pair. An important ingredient is the dependence of the stellar moment of inertia on rotation frequency (time).

The Reflares and Outburst Evolution in the Accreting Millisecond Pulsar Sax J1808.4–3658: a Disk Truncated near Co-rotation?
The accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4–3658 shows peculiar low luminosity states known as “reflares” after the end of the main outburst. During this phase the X-ray luminosity of the source varies by up to three orders of magnitude in less than 1–2 days. The lowest X-ray luminosity observed reaches a value of 10 erg s 32 1 ~ , only a factor of a few brighter than its typical quiesce...
متن کاملNeutron Stars in Microquasars
We discuss the “basic” condition for an accreting neutron star to become a microquasar, i.e. ejecting relativistic particles orthogonal to the accretion disk instead of confining disk-material down to the magnetic poles and creating the two emitting caps typical for a X-ray pulsar. Jet creation is prevented for B≥ 10 G independent of the accretion rate. This excludes the possibility for a class...
متن کاملGamma-ray burst afterglows and evolution of postburst fireballs with energy injection from strongly magnetic millisecond pulsars
Millisecond pulsars with strong magnetic fields may be formed through several processes, e.g. accretion-induced collapse of magnetized white dwarfs, merger of two neutron stars, and accretion-induced phase transitions of neutron stars. During the birth of such a pulsar, an initial fireball available for a gamma-ray burst (GRB) may occur. We here study evolution of a postburst relativistic fireb...

We present here a timing analysis of the fastest accreting millisecond pulsar IGR J00291+5934 using RXTE data taken during the outburst of December 2004. We corrected the arrival times of all the events for the orbital (Doppler) effects and performed a timing analysis of the resulting phase delays. In this way we find a clear parabolic trend of the pulse phase delays showing that the pulsar is ...
متن کاملThe Luminosity and Energy Dependence of Pulse Phase Lags in the Accretion-Powered Millisecond Pulsar Sax
Soft phase lags, in which X-ray pulses in lower energy bands arrive later than pulses in higher energy bands, have been observed in nearly all accretion-powered millisecond pulsars, but their origin remains an open question. In a study of the 2.5 ms accretion-powered pulsar SAX J1808.4−3658, we report that the magnitude of these lags is strongly dependent on the accretion rate. During the brigh...
